How Prontei works

From the hummingbird to the text, everything happens on your computer.

Step by step

  1. Install the extension

    Install Prontei from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons. In both cases the extension updates itself; follow the installation steps.

  2. Click the hummingbird

    In WhatsApp Web, click the hummingbird next to a voice message. Only that message is transcribed.

  3. The first time, allow the download

    Prontei asks for your permission to download the transcription model. This happens only once.

  4. Copy the text

    The text appears below the message, ready to copy, and stays saved on your computer.

Transcription happens on your computer, without sending audio or text to a speech recognition service. Downloading the models uses the internet, and WhatsApp Web still uses WhatsApp’s own services. See the privacy policy.

In Firefox, Prontei opens its own tab for transcription. Leave it open: if it closes in the middle of a transcription, just try again.

Test this browser

Whenever possible, Prontei uses the GPU (the graphics card) to transcribe faster. This test shows whether this browser can use it. Nothing is downloaded, and the result doesn’t leave this page.

The extension runs this same test before transcribing. The result can change after a browser or computer update.

What Prontei doesn’t do yet

  • Phone and tablet. Prontei doesn’t work on a phone or tablet. It’s an extension for WhatsApp Web on a computer.
  • Safari. The test above works in it, but the extension can’t be installed. Use Chrome or Firefox on a computer.
  • Manual version in Firefox. Permanent installation, which receives updates automatically, is through Firefox Add-ons. The unsigned Firefox ZIP is only for temporary installation: it doesn’t receive updates and Firefox removes it when you close the browser.
  • Other languages. The model was prepared for Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Perfect text. Transcription can get words wrong. Check the text before using it for something important.
